About Us

trivago, a German travel tech company, is building an accommodation search platform to help millions of travelers find their ideal stay for a great value. We save our users time and empower them to get more out of travel by comparing accommodation from leading booking sites. Travelers come to trivago because they know they can rely on our metasearch platform to provide the best deals and deliver search results they love. To accomplish this, we work with a team of international talents eager to develop, take ownership for driving progress, and make a real difference.

The Role

As a Backend Software Engineering Lead, you'll guide a team of 8 Java and Kotlin engineers in the development and maintenance of our global accommodation marketplace. You will play a critical role in ensuring that the core of our business runs smoothly and efficiently, using state-of-the-art technologies in a cross-functional and collaborative environment. This is a high-impact role meant for someone with a background in computer science or other technical field and a proven track record in leading experienced engineering teams.

 How you’ll make an impact:

  • Lead, guide, and mentor a team of 8 Java and Kotlin engineers
  • Ensure that your teams deliver high quality, scalable, and reliable solutions
  • Guide architectural decisions and drive the team in evaluating new technologies
  • Maintain a technical roadmap for our projects
  • Collaborate closely with the principal engineer of the unit, project owners, and data science leads to align your team's work with the company's vision and objectives
  • Communicate with stakeholders to ensure that your team's vision aligns with other teams and the company's vision
  • Help your engineers grow by providing coaching, feedback, and opportunities for professional development

What we’re looking for:

  • Solid experience leading and mentoring software engineering teams with a proven track record of delivering high-quality, scalable, and reliable solutions
  • A strategic business mindset capable of translating business goals into actionable steps
  • Ability to balance between pragmatic and principled software solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • A deep understanding of architecture and design patterns
  • Extensive experience in Java or Kotlin development

What makes you stand out:

  • A PhD in computer science or a similar field
  • Previous experience in working on data-heavy applications and collaborating with data scientists
  • Experience with technologies such as Redis, Kafka, Project Reactor, Prometheus, Protobuf, Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio, Docker or GCP

Don’t let these nice-to-haves stop you from applying for the job! As long as you have relevant experience and the right attitude, we’d love to hear from you.
